Somatic provocations

Somatic provocations

Scope
  • Embodied Research
  • Philosophical Inquiry
  • Global Collaboration
  • Experimental Design

The conceptions of “body” in design processes have had major ontological shifts in this contemporary and post-disciplinary era. Art-based research practices have played a pivotal role in augmenting the existing theoretical methods as negotiations between materiality and body. With this ongoing discourse and shift in perspectives globally the role of the active body and associated embodied aspects ensures its fundamental role both in experimental research in art and design. This has resulted in an expansion of the somatic perspectives of the body, which is explored for a vast expressive understanding and is inspired by analyses of the interaction with technological interfaces or tangible matters.
This traveling exhibition brings together an international group of acclaimed academicians, researchers, and designers associated with the field of fashion and textile design. This provides a platform to share and exchange their thoughts on the role of the body and its changing perspective in design processes through basic experimental art and design research. This exhibition generates and demonstrates knowledge of the current philosophical inquiries on the body. Through both pedagogical experiences and practice.
In an international artistic research collaboration between Rohma Khan, Associate Professor at the School of Visual Art and Design, Beaconhouse National University, and Faseeh Saleem faculty at Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design, currently enrolled as an industrial Ph.D. scholar, at the Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås, Sweden, research and counterfactual artifacts, material speculations and empirical analysis on the body is presented as a part of a traveling exhibition.
The exhibition includes work by Anna Lidström, Clemens Thornquist, Erin Lewis, Faseeh Saleem, Helga Halldorsdottir, Liaba Aslam, Linnea Bågander, Rohma Moid Khan, Shawana Abid, Vidmina Stasiulyte, Yaseer Waheed, Zeb Bilal.
