Beyond Disciplines at Expo 2020, Dubai

Scope

Description:

“Beyond Disciplines; A Future Context”, was a session moderated by Rohma Khan at the Knowledge and Learning Week at Pakistan Pavilion, Dubai Expo 2020 on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Multi-purpose Room of Pakistan Pavilion. The panelists included Quddus Mirza, Graham Cairns, Aarish Sardar, Zain Adil and Kiran Khan.

Inspired from Gyatri Spivak’s book “Death of a Discipline”, this panel speculated post-disciplinary worlds through acknowledging and envisioning critical experiences and potentialities that help us rework and envision the future variations of art and design production, education, and scholarship.

As a part of this panel discussion, we explored the multiple territorial and conceptual claims of post-industrial disciplines. Are these contained by ideological foundations, praxis or another exclusionary criterion?

BNU’s own history and experience served as a canvas to widen the conversation. We gestured toward a future that may or may not surpass the boundaries of institutions and look at commonalities in a new way.

The speculation of a post-disciplinary world may be built upon a thought landscape of historical and future conditions of simultaneity and contemporaneity. After the death of the discipline, how do we conceive of knowledge, its boundaries and its classifications? What are the problems and potentials of these?
